Who wants to be a millionaire Special Editions

Who wants to be a millionaire Special Editions Review

In the past, there were Who wants to be a millionaire games on PS and PS2 that were although good fun, easily cheatable. Easily done by pausing the game and looking up on google for answers. While this was a easy way to earn 1 million, it also kinda removes the fun out of millionaire. The same can be said for Who wants to be a millionaire Special Editions. The lastest game by doublesix which is fun but is far from a good trivia game.

Incase you don't know what Who wants to be millionaire is about, it's a tv game show hosted by Chris Tarrent about contestants who first compete in a fastest finger first round in order to get a chance at winning a million pounds. But there are other versions of Who wants to be a millionaire that are from other countries other than the uk.

Who wants to be a millionaire Special Editions looks surprisingly good. Especially because also surprisingly, (for me at least) the game is running on the latest version of Unreal Engine which is a plus for me. I just wish the contestants that sits on the chair weren't silhoettes and that the audience could've looked better but that is somewhat offset by DLC that allows you to change the contestants and audience aswell as the look of the stage itself so that's good at least. If you willing to pay for it.

Chris Tarrent isn't here to lend his role as the host like he does on the television show. Instead, we get some other british host who never explains who he is. But what's disappointing is that he doesn't have alot to say. He always repeats the first few lines when you start a new game and he always say "Answer the next 15 questions correctly and you'll win a million. There's no time limit and you have 3 lifelines to help you. Good luck. Let's play Who wants to be a millionaire" before you get the first question. Even worse is that they can't be skipped. But if you have the patience and just let it fly by, you'll have no problem. If you don't have patience however, just mute it and be sure to try and wait in peace. There's also repetitive sounds cues when choosing an answer and getting it wrong or right unlike the actual show. But there is the latest introduction theme from the game show at least.

In terms of gameplay, It's pretty much what you expect out of millionaire. Answer 15 questions and your dreams of becoming a virtual millionaire are fulfilled. But before you do that, you must participate in a game of fastest finger first. It ain't really necessary to win because even if you fail, your not penalised of having to go through it again. You just skip to the real game which is a good thing. Fastest finger first is only there if you wish to get a scoring boost for the online leaderboards. The real game has what you expect in terms of gameplay. You have your 3 lifelines which are 50:50, Phone a friend and ask the audience. So if you happen to get stuck, use them as they can sometimes help except when on the final 5 questions which are hard. But the real problem is that with no timer, the game is easily cheated through to the end. Not that it matters to most people cause it's just a game. But it does kinda take the fun out of having to try and get to a million on your own. Which is a shame because even though i always get a question wrong at question 3-5 or maybe higher, (Yes. i'm that bad a trivia lol) i always kept trying again and again hopefully to get past question 5. But with that said, if you wish to keep using Google as a lifeline with infinite use, go ahead.

The game isn't really gonna last long either. You can just cheat through the game in less than 30 minutes and if your only hunting for Trophies/Achievements or just not bothered to buy the DLC to extend your time with this game, then there really isn't a reason you should buy this game at all. The Trophies/Achievements are well easy to earn through (As mentioned earlier in this review) cheating.
So the replay value isn't really worth it if you just get the Trophies/Achievements and not bother with the game again. But it could be worth something if you like to play the game for fun. Which i do after getting the trophies.

Verdict
Who wants to be a millionaire Special Editions is a game that is far from being a good trivia game. The game looks good but it doesn't save the game from an easily cheatable tatic, mostly little lasting appeal and the british host who does little to be entertaining. If you want the true Who wants to be a millionaire experience, just watch either the TV show or play the somewhat better PS or PS2 game versions of the TV show.

Presentation = 6.5
The feel of the millionaire series is here but the british host does little to entertain while you play

Visuals = 8.0
Looks excatly like the show thanks to Unreal Engine 3. The british host doesn't look too bad either but i just wish the audience looked better and that we could see the look of the contestants

Sound and Music = 6.0
Repetitive quotes from the british can be a bit annoying and the repetitive sounds cues are disappointing. The latest theme music from the game show is here though

Gameplay = 6.5
Same typical trivia stuff that can be seen on the show. But it's let down by easily cheating your way through to the million

Replay Value = 5.0
While there's very little reason to play it again, DLC could change that around with more content. But only if you pay for it

Overall Score = 6.0
